When most people hear the words “wisdom tooth extraction”, they imagine a lengthy procedure, significant swelling, and a long recovery.
In reality, with the right expertise and technique, the experience can be far quicker and more comfortable than many patients expect.
At Alban City Dental & Surgical Centre, our philosophy is simple: the less trauma we create during surgery, the better the outcome for our patients. Years of surgical training and experience have helped us refine techniques that make many wisdom tooth extractions more efficient, minimally invasive, and more comfortable.
In many cases, the procedure itself takes only a matter of minutes.
Patients are often surprised by how efficiently Dr Prakash Promod can remove a difficult wisdom tooth. But the aim is not speed for its own sake. It is precision: removing the tooth with as little trauma as possible.
For patients, a shorter operation can mean less disruption to surrounding tissues, less swelling, and a smoother recovery. That efficiency is not about rushing. It comes from experience, careful planning, and refined technique.
What patients benefit from is not speed itself, but the years of education, surgical training, and hands-on experience behind it. An experienced surgeon can carry out challenging procedures smoothly because they have spent thousands of hours mastering their craft.
Dr Prakash Promod is uniquely qualified as both a doctor and a dentist and has spent more than two decades working in oral and maxillofacial surgery. His training includes dentistry, medicine, general surgery, orthopaedics, plastic surgery, facial reconstruction, advanced implant surgery, and complex oral surgery. He has trained with leading surgeons in the UK and internationally and has spent many years teaching the next generation of surgeons and dentists.
Over the course of his career, he has extracted more than 30,000 wisdom teeth.
That depth of experience means he has encountered virtually every variation of wisdom tooth position, anatomy, and surgical challenge imaginable.
As a result, many cases considered highly complex elsewhere are part of a normal working week for our team.
A significant proportion of the wisdom tooth surgery we perform comes from referrals by other dentists and healthcare professionals.
Routine extractions are well within the scope of many dentists, but some wisdom teeth are more complex because they are close to important nerves, associated with cysts, deeply impacted within the jawbone, or complicated by medical conditions and anatomy. In these situations, patients are often referred to a clinician with extensive experience in complex oral surgery.
At Alban City Dental & Surgical Centre, we regularly receive referrals from general dentists, specialist dentists, and other healthcare professionals who trust Dr Promod to manage cases beyond the scope of their practice.
That referral network reflects the confidence colleagues place in his surgical judgement and ability to manage challenging cases safely.
For patients, this means that even if you have been told your wisdom tooth is particularly difficult to remove, there is often a solution. We routinely assess and treat cases involving deeply impacted wisdom teeth, proximity to nerves, associated cysts, previous failed extractions, sinus involvement, and complex medical histories.
Minimally invasive surgery focuses on achieving the desired result while causing as little disruption to the surrounding tissues as possible.
In wisdom tooth surgery, this may involve:
The result is often:
In some cases, removing the entire wisdom tooth is not the safest option. Where the roots lie very close to the inferior dental nerve, a coronectomy may be advised instead of a full extraction. This involves removing the crown of the tooth while carefully leaving the roots in place to reduce the risk of nerve injury. It is a well-recognised technique in selected cases and can be an important part of a minimally invasive approach to lower wisdom tooth surgery.
Every patient is different, and some wisdom teeth are naturally more challenging than others. However, our objective is always to achieve the best possible outcome through the most minimally invasive approach suited to the individual patient.
This week, Dr Promod treated a patient with recurrent sinusitis caused by a wisdom tooth associated with a cyst.
The situation was particularly complex because both the tooth and the cyst extended into the maxillary sinus.

Using an advanced surgical technique refined through years of hospital-level care, Dr Promod was able to access and remove both the tooth and the cyst safely and efficiently.
The entire procedure took less than seven minutes.
For the patient, this meant less time in surgery, less tissue trauma, and a smoother recovery than might otherwise be expected for such a complex case.
In surgery, experience often translates directly into better outcomes.
An experienced surgeon develops an understanding of anatomy, tissue handling, surgical access, and problem-solving that cannot be learned from textbooks alone.
The ability to anticipate challenges before they arise is one reason complex procedures can often be completed so efficiently.
Many difficult wisdom tooth extractions that may take considerably longer in less experienced hands can often be completed in a fraction of the time through careful planning, refined technique, and extensive experience.
At Alban City Dental, all wisdom tooth extractions are performed by Clinical Director Dr Prakash Promod and hospital Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon Mr Val Sharma.
Many patients arrive for wisdom tooth surgery feeling anxious, especially if they have heard horror stories from friends or family.
One patient who described herself as terrified of dentists later left a review saying that having her tooth extracted by Dr Promod was one of the most relaxing experiences she had ever had!

You can read more of our patient feedback on Google.
While that may sound surprising, it highlights something important: patients often fear the unknown far more than the procedure itself.
When surgery is performed gently, efficiently, and with clear communication, the experience can be very different from what patients expect.
For patients who feel particularly nervous about treatment, Alban City Dental & Surgical Centre also offers Consultant Anaesthetist-led sedation by Dr Anthony Gubbay.
This allows patients to feel deeply relaxed throughout their procedure while remaining carefully monitored by an experienced anaesthetist.
Combined with minimally invasive surgical techniques, sedation can help create a calm and comfortable experience for even very anxious patients.
At Alban City Dental & Surgical Centre, we believe patients deserve more than simply having a tooth removed.
They deserve careful planning, expert surgery, modern technology, and a team dedicated to achieving the best possible outcome.
Sometimes the greatest compliment a surgeon can receive is when a patient says, “Is that it?”
For us, that’s often a sign that everything has gone exactly to plan.
